Do I need an electrician or a plumber for heating controls?

Heating controls are primarily electrical - thermostats, programmers, wiring centres, and zone valve connections are all wiring jobs. We're qualified electricians who specialise in this work. We also handle the mechanical side where needed (valve swaps, drain-downs, refills), so you don't need to book two separate tradespeople.

Will a smart thermostat work with my existing heating system?

Most smart thermostats are compatible with standard UK boiler systems, but many older S-plan and Y-plan setups need wiring modifications to work properly. We assess your system before installation and handle any modifications needed. If a particular thermostat isn't suitable, we'll recommend an alternative.

What is the difference between S-plan and Y-plan?

S-plan uses two separate motorised valves to control heating and hot water independently. Y-plan uses a single mid-position valve that switches between heating, hot water, or both. S-plan gives better control and is the current standard. We carry out Y-plan to S-plan conversions regularly.

What is a boiler interlock and does my system need one?

A boiler interlock is a wiring arrangement that prevents the boiler from firing when there's no demand for heat or hot water. It's a legal requirement under Building Regulations Part L for all heating systems. Many existing installations are non-compliant - particularly older ones. We can check yours and bring it up to standard.

My heating isn't working but the boiler fires up fine. What's wrong?

This is almost always a controls fault rather than a boiler problem. Common causes include a stuck zone valve, a faulty thermostat not sending a signal, a wiring fault at the junction box, or a failed programmer. We specialise in diagnosing and fixing exactly these issues.

Do you work on gas boilers or gas appliances?

No. We work exclusively on the controls and wiring side of heating systems - everything between the boiler terminals and your thermostats. We don't touch gas pipework or boiler internals. For gas work, we can refer you to trusted Gas Safe registered engineers in Thanet.

How much does a smart thermostat installation cost?

Labour starts from £160 depending on the complexity of your existing wiring. A simple combi boiler swap is quicker than wiring a Nest into an older S-plan system. Parts are on top and depend on the thermostat you choose (Hive from £155, tado from £100, Nest from £219). We can source the thermostat for you or you can supply your own. Can you add extra heating zones to my existing system?

Yes. We can add zones to most existing systems by fitting additional motorised valves and thermostats. This lets you control different areas of your home independently - for example, upstairs and downstairs on separate schedules. We handle the plumbing and wiring for the complete installation.

I'm a gas engineer. Can you wire controls on my boiler installs?

Yes. We provide electrical services to gas engineers and plumbers across Thanet. Whether you need S-plan or Y-plan controls wired in on a new boiler, a Y-plan to S-plan conversion, Part L compliance wiring, or thermostat and programmer connections - we handle the electrical side. Same-day and next-day availability where possible. Call us to discuss a regular working arrangement.

How quickly can you come out?

We aim for next-working-day appointments where possible, and can often attend the same day for urgent faults. Call us to check availability - we'll give you the earliest slot we have.

Are you qualified and insured?

Yes. We hold the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), City & Guilds 2330, and City & Guilds 2394 qualifications. We carry full public liability insurance and professional indemnity cover. All work is guaranteed for 12 months.

Do you work with landlords and letting agents?

Yes. We work with landlords and property managers across Thanet to ensure heating controls meet current Building Regulations. We provide documentation for your compliance records and can carry out periodic checks across property portfolios.

What brands do you work with?

We install and service controls from all major manufacturers including Honeywell Home, Drayton, Heatmiser, Google Nest, Hive, tado, Siemens, Danfoss, and EPH. We're brand-independent - we recommend the right product for your system, not the one that pays us commission.
